Chile's president, Sebastian Pinera, announced Sunday that 33 miners trapped 2,300 ft in the ground for the past 17 days were still alive. The miners were working at a San Jose gold and copper mine north of Santiago when the rock above them collapsed on August 5th. The men passed a note through a bore hole that read, "All 33 of us are well inside the shelter". A camera lowered through the bore hole on Sunday showed the miners sweaty, but in good condition and high spirits. Until Sunday, there had been no sign that the miners had survived. The miners will be given fresh supplies of food and water, but it will take at least 120 days, or 4 months, to carve a second shaft wide enough for the miners to be extracted one at a time. Few rescues take more than a couple weeks.
