Because it's very likely life has emerged on other planets just as it has on earth. See Drake's Equation for that. This, of course, doesn't prove aliens have been visiting us. However, even this is possible. We, as humans, see it impossible because we have a very limited lifespan. Other planets may have intelligent lifeforms that live 1000's of years. Earth has similar (non intelligent) lifeforms. Yes, this is hypothetical,? but not impossible.
