Hatton is putting in work but he's not being effective AT ALL. Just wasting energy. Those attempts at in-fighting that the ref kept breaking up (annoying as hell) weren't getting Ricky anywhere. A high work rate becomes your worst enemy if you can't use it effectively. And that's exactly what wore Rick out by round 8. He was throwing shots constantly, wearing himself down, but because he's not landing, his OPPONENT wasn't getting worn down. Hatton's ineffective aggression? got him knocked out.

I? think Floyd is amazing, I love what he can do. Great skill. But I watched this fight live, and I watched it a few times recorded, and again now... I gotta say, Cortez was a GREAT ref for Mayweather. I will always be very curious what this fight would have looked had the ref just stayed out of it more, and told them to "work their way out" as some do..

Cortez is a good ref..used to be better..Now it seems like he likes the 15 minutes of fame, and gets involved too much. ? Mils Lane..greatest ref in history. Never saw him unless necessary. Not to mention he was all of 5'4'' and always kept control.

I think Joe Cortez gets way too much criticism for his performance here. All he did was do his job, which is to enforce the rules and holding is against the rules, so he stopped Hatton from doing it. I don't see why people would be angry about that. Boxing fans are very fickle. When you see a referee who doesn't do his? job and allows tons of clinching, people slam the referee and call it boring, but when a referee stops all of the clinching people say he is biased/getting involved too much.

The "ref" is the only one doing his job properly! Boxers punch eachother. Anything more than that and the ref is supossed to? step in. Pay attention, people, and you will see what's right in front of you.
